@culturalperspective: Was Lee Kuan Yew the greatest leader of the modern era? In 1965 Singapore was a poor port with no oil, no farmland, and not even enough drinking water. It had to buy water from Malaysia. Unemployment ran near 14 percent and half the population could not read. One generation later Singapore is one of the safest, cleanest, and richest cities on Earth. The cause was one man and one rule. Lee Kuan Yew did not lead from the left or the right. He did not follow capitalism or socialism. He followed one question. Does it work? If a policy made his people richer and safer, he kept it. If it did not, he threw it out, no matter who it offended. That sounds simple, but it is rare. Most leaders stay loyal to an ideology or attach themselves to a bigger power. In Lee's time that meant the United States, the Soviet Union, or China. He chose none of them. He chose Singapore. There was a real cost. He controlled the press. He punished crime harshly. His party ran almost unopposed. Many freedoms were put on hold to build the country. As Singapore grew stable and rich, that grip slowly loosened. The hard controls were tools to build the nation fast, and once it was built they were no longer needed.
