Wouldn’t this all just mean the smell is the chlorine doing its job?

Why you’re supposed to shower before swimming but hardly anyone does

it's not. it's the chloramines which is when chlorine is used up sanitizing the pool from organic matter. so it CAN be from pee but it will also just happen without pee as the chlorine breaks down from germs.

I spent 10 years (from 14-24 years old) working for a luxury pool company. Pools only smell like chlorine when they’re sanitizing something. If the water is clean it won’t smell, but if there’s something that’s being cleaned it’ll smell strong. No matter what it is

you're smelling the reaction elements left over by chlorine doing it's job and creating chloramines, and that is what you're smelling

The smell is combined chlorine. Essentially it's the smell of the chlorine having done its job. Free chlorine is what does the cleaning. go look it up. it's perfectly normal. It just means you need to add more free chlorine to finish sanitizing.

Now this is a great way to show my kids why they need to shower after they come back from a “public pool” or any pool!

That's why the chlorine is there, to keep us safe.

you should set up this experiment so that you don't know what's in the sample until you read the label after giving it an evaluation. probably also you should not know which one is the control. the trouble is when you know what is in the sample, you will bias your mind's subjective opinion about the odor.

Looked it up and it’s when chlorine interacts with nitrogen containing compounds.

I mean he hyped up the pee aspect, but he mentioned other nitrogen-containing organics make chloramines too. I don’t think he was “wrong”, just “Popular Science” depth.

It’s literally a game of organics. Chlorine attracts organic compounds, plan and simple. The more organic compounds, the more smell.

The whole point of chlorine is it’s a oxidizing agent and that is a smell.. which means it’s doing its job

I think it’s more bleach tbh. Whenever I clean my kitchen and use bleach (not very often), my kitchen smells like a pool
