@secondordermind: We crave the same closeness that can wound us. The Hedgehog’s Dilemma is the tragedy and beauty of human intimacy: we suffer without connection, yet the people who get closest to us are the ones who can hurt us most deeply. Also pls ignore the sirens in the beginning. #hedgehogsdilemma #psychology #attachmenttheory #relationshipadvice #intimacy
If love didn't hurt, the courage it takes to love someone wouldn't be necessary so love wouldn't be as special as it is. To be honest,I'm not sure if I agree with the point that we should learn the right distance. I'd say, if you are going to love someone, do it 100% and learn to live with their "spikes", because if you constantly try to avoid the spikes you'll never be as free as you could be around them. But maybe we're just thinking of different things when we say "spikes".

Schopenhauer really looked at a hedgehog and thought, 'I know exactly how this animal behaves,' without consulting a single hedgehog.
They are solitary animals and build nests for warmth.

Eh, it depends, most pebuild a foundation of internal reality based upon the culture and information they gain from the world. Certain other people create a reality by questioning that foundation and coming up with their own conclusions and answers. That 2nd group of people has the capacity to truly build a new basis for comprehension and reality, but those that are capable of it are so few, and or jaded that I generally doesn't happen all that often. But the 1st group is cognitively dependant upon the thoughts of other people as a basis for reality itself, so nothing beyond the norm is possible within that relationship.

I think perfect closeness without pain is possible, but it's dependent on being able to achieve alignment.
The difficulty in alignment is that you need a central static framework to align ON and most people don't have that.
Reality is the only viable candidate for alignment, but it's more complex than most people will invest the energy into understanding, and contains aspects people prioritize avoiding.
You just need a partner or culture that TRULY has primacy in deep understanding of reality, and enough intellectual motivation to find it.
The venn diagram is not in our favor though, I'm afraid.
