Ark's parents were in the US Legally. This is often ignored. The case was actually about the consequences of the Chinese Exclusion Act another factor most Social Media Constitutional scholars also ignore.

You probably should have started with English Common Law which is what lead to the 14th Amendment after Dred Scott. The view had already been that the children of free persons were citizens if born in land controlled by the sovereign. When the Supreme Court ruled in Dred Scott, everyone was like, "WTF? That's not how we do things!" so they passed and ratified the 14th to state in plain text what they'd considered true the whole time, with the addition that by then ALL persons were "free persons."
