Annya Mari was brutally assaulted by CRPD last week. On July 6th, a small group of individuals were present at the Cedar Rapids DHS office accompanying migrant neighbors for their appointments. While in the midst of documenting ICE activity, CRPD was called on the group multiple times. The first time police came, they left soon after, and confirmed that no illegal activity was occurring. Then, CRPD came again. This time, however, a different officer arrived, and seemed to have his mind made up that arrests were going to be made, without any reason or cause. He began detaining one activist without any explanation. He then ordered the arrest of Annya Mari who was advocating for the activist who had committed no crime. As you can see in the video, she is quite literally just standing there, talking, when the cops decided to not only arrest her, but BODY SLAMMED her to the ground. Two grown men, body slammed a non-violent woman who was committing no crime. It seems that the arrest was only triggered because she was one of the most vocal people against the police’s infringement on the activists’ rights to protest and document. This was a blatant demonstration of unnecessary excessive force by CRPD. A situation that was not escalated, that was civilly disobedient, ended with two unwarranted arrests and Annya slammed to the ground on her back and neck. Two individuals who were only offering aid to their community members and peacefully protesting ICE activity are now forced to defend themselves in court. They need our support. Please donate to the GoFundMe. This is unacceptable. The Cedar Rapids Police Department needs to do better. This is unacceptable, and we’re calling on our community members for support. Any funds that exceed the financial goal or that aren’t used towards legal fees will be donated to local activist groups that are fighting for immigrant rights and racial equity.
