my brain shuts down when i'm surprised or when i'm feeling an intense emotion. i often find it difficult or impossible to actually collect my thoughts and process enough to respond thoughtfully and fully in those types of moments. but i don't say "i don't know what to say," i say, "i want to give this the thought and response it deserves, and to do that i need some time to process." the first way says "i don't care," but the second way says "i care a LOT." (also important is that i actually DO spend time processing and thinking and actually DO follow up with a real and sincere response, which shows it wasn't just an excuse to get out of the situation.)
