In the late 1960s, Helen was a dying logging town in need of an economic boost. Local businessmen hired artist John Kollock, who had been stationed in Bavaria, Germany, during his military service. Because the North Georgia mountains reminded him of the Alps, he sketched designs to transform the town. The town officially adopted the Bavarian theme in 1969 through strict zoning. Every building, from local storefronts to national chains like Wendy's, is legally required to feature the distinct German Alpine style, including gingerbread trim, flower boxes, and bright colors. The rebrand was a massive success, turning the tiny Appalachian town into the third most visited city in Georgia, drawing over 2 million tourists a year. 💜

I live 5 mins from Helen,I go to church in Helen.
If you're still here,go to the heritage & arts center. They have a film explaining how Helen was founded & later turned into a German village, there is also an art gallery in it with one of a kind, handmade art items.

Go visit Nora Mill, just outside Helen. It's a historic, still operational grist mill with lots of history. They make stone ground grits and corn meal, and sell candies, jams and jellies, etc.
