@cookinwithcongress: Gross but true — the 1700s and 1800s had a loooooooot of gnarly bowel issues for folks in Washington DC. The President, VP, senators and reps and judges all had one thing in common — dysentery and diarrhea. Why? The water. Poor water treatment meant people were gobbling up diseases from the untreated water of the Potomac and dying — like, the President of the United States actually died from this (RIP Zach Taylor, you would have loved Long John Silvers). It became such a chronic issue that travelers to DC would forgo water altogether and just drink beer or hard cider or wine, the safer options. Kids, too. Thank goodness, the water in DC is totally fine to touch now. Well, not all of it I guess. #july4th #History #learnontiktokcontest #washingtondc

One of my professors used to say “everybody in the 18th and 17th centuries was a little bit drunk all of the time” because of the water situation.

The same thing in Pennsylvania. Hard whiskey was popular here for a reason, the water was horrible.
