@mike_on_parenting: Most of us hear the word “consequence” and immediately think of punishment. But that’s not what a consequence actually is. A consequence is simply what happens after a behavior. Yes, there are times when losing a privilege makes sense. But if that’s the only consequence your child experiences, you’re missing one of the most powerful ways to shape behavior. Ask yourself: 👉 What happens after they share without being asked? 👉 What happens after they handle disappointment well? 👉 What happens after they clean up the first time you ask? 👉 What happens after they speak respectfully? The behaviors that receive attention, connection, responsibility, trust, and opportunities tend to grow. Don’t just create consequences for the behaviors you want to stop. Create meaningful consequences for the behaviors you want to see more of. If you’re looking for practical ways to build better behavior without constant power struggles, comment CALM and I’ll send you the details of my Calm Parenting Playbook. #parentingtips #parentingadvice #parentcoach #parentingsupport #parentingsupport Calm Parenting, parenting partner, parenting child relationship, family dynamics, parenting coach

My only issue with this is that it creates a false sense of reality. As they get older they’ll look for a reward for every good thing they do instead of intrinsically feeling good about about doing a good deed.

Nothing we do works, he isn’t reward driven or reverts back after the rewards happened.

They’d definitely do it just because there’s a reward coming 😂 Nope! Not in my household. I want them to learn that respectful behavior is expected, not something they only do to earn a prize.

What about a way to have them stay at the dinner table. For an almost 3 year old

Careful, Sounds like you are bribing in a way. That can teach them to “play the system” just to get what they want.

I agree with reinforcing positive behaviour and as a qualified nanny of 22 years and working with hundreds of children I can genuinely say when you compliment their good behaviour they want to show you more. I don’t agree with saying if you do this good behaviour you will be rewarded… they shouldn’t need to be rewarded, the reward is good praise and positive attention. I have had some extremely difficult children with a variety of behavioural issues and/or additional needs and I use the positive reinforcement technique and also give them skills/tools how to manage their thoughts and feelings to prevent them from lashing out at siblings, or screaming or not listening etc…
