Thomas Edison worked on one of the first carbon microphones in 1877 to make voices sound better on the telephone. It wasn’t like the modern microphones we use today, but inside it had tiny pieces of carbon that made the signal stronger. Basically, one of the first microphones was made to improve the telephone, not for podcasts or music.
