Dmitry Donskoy is a Project 941 Akula (Typhoon-class) nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine one of the largest submarines ever constructed. Built for strategic deterrence during the Cold War, it was launched in 1980 at the Sevmash shipyard for the Soviet Union Navy and later served under Russia. At around 175 meters long with a massive displacement, the submarine was designed to operate beneath Arctic ice for extended patrols. Its twin pressure-hull design gave it exceptional survivability and stability in harsh conditions. Powered by nuclear reactors, it could remain submerged for long durations, limited mainly by crew endurance and supplies rather than fuel. Originally built to carry long-range ballistic missiles, the vessel later became a test platform for modern submarine-launched missile systems, extending its service life far beyond many of its sister ships. Its size, engineering, and strategic role made it a defining symbol of Cold War naval technology, built not for visibility, but for presence beneath the ocean’s surface. #Russia #RussianNavy #submarines #DmitryDonskoy #navalPower
