Right as the train accelerated, that cable violently snapped. It whipped backward, slicing straight through the fiberglass car and slicing the left leg of a 12 year old boy riding in the front row. This wasn’t a random accident. Investigators found the park ignored the manufacturer's strict monthly safety schedule. They opted for a cheaper six month alternative instead. And still the routine inspection was weeks overdue. The cable had developed severe metal fatigue. The exact kind of wear and tear that inspections are supposed to catch. The roller coaster resumed operation in 2010. In 2011, the family reached a settlement with the park. In the end, the incident forced the implementation of much stricter state laws when it comes to roller coasters. Xcelerator is still one of the fastest roller coasters in the world, going from 0 to 82 mph in under three seconds. All this could've been avoided.
