That feeling of constant fullness was never the goal of breastfeeding. 🤍 If your breasts suddenly feel soft while breastfeeding, it’s easy to wonder: Did my milk supply drop? Are my breasts empty? Is my baby getting enough milk? Especially when the early weeks taught you to associate hard, heavy, leaking breasts with having a “good” milk supply. But as you move out of the earliest weeks of breastfeeding, something important is happening behind the scenes: your milk supply is regulating. Around 12 weeks postpartum, many breastfeeding mothers enter what we call Stage Two of Breastfeeding. Your body has had weeks of responding to your baby’s demand, and milk production begins to operate more efficiently around those needs. One of the strangest parts of getting better at breastfeeding is that you lose the physical signs that made you feel reassured you were making milk. Your breasts feel softer. You aren’t waking up painfully full. You don’t leak through everything. You aren’t constantly engorged. And suddenly you think something is wrong. Soft breasts don’t automatically mean low milk supply. They may simply be part of what established breastfeeding looks like. If you’re actually concerned about low milk supply, look beyond breast fullness. Your baby’s growth, diaper output and ability to transfer milk are much more useful pieces of the picture. An IBCLC or healthcare provider can help assess your individual feeding situation if you have concerns. Welcome to Stage Two. Your breasts feel different because breastfeeding is different now. 🤍 Bodily provides educational information, not medical advice.
