🌐 Japan Just Set a New Internet Speed World Record Researchers at Japan's NICT, working with Sumitomo Electric, have achieved a staggering internet speed of 1.02 petabits per second across a distance of 1,808 kilometers. That is fast enough to transfer well over 100,000 gigabytes of data every second and represents a major leap beyond the previous world record. It is a remarkable demonstration of how optical networking continues to push the limits of communication technology. The breakthrough was made possible by a new type of optical fiber containing 19 separate light-carrying cores inside a cable that is no thicker than today's standard fiber. This is a significant engineering achievement because it dramatically increases data capacity while maintaining the same physical dimensions. In theory, future upgrades could use much of the existing fiber infrastructure without requiring entirely new cable routes underground. While speeds like these are still confined to research laboratories, they offer a glimpse into the future of global connectivity. As demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, 8K streaming, and massive data transfers continues to grow, innovations in fiber optics will play a critical role in building tomorrow's internet. Which technology do you think will benefit the most from internet speeds like this? 🚀 #infotimely
