My dad remarried after my mum’s death. His second wife had a son (he was 18 when they married) who lived with them (rent free!) until my father sold the house a few years his second wife’s death. Dad named her son and myself as joint executors. I kept asking dad to reconsider this decision because I could foresee that this might be an issue. Well it was a problem. We lived in different cities. There was always an issue whenever meetings needed to happen. Finally the lawyer I hired suggested that he remove himself as executor, to which he agreed. But then never signed the form! Ugh. It’s been a nightmare. I tell everyone two things: 1. NEVER appoint joint executors and 2. Just appoint a lawyer who is an expert in executing wills as executor as it’s money well spent. It’s not an honour to be named executor!
