Going back to the nineties I was making friends with people significantly older than me. It isn't until this moment that I realize I was probably not successfully pretending to be an adult on IRC or AIM. And there were people who were quite happy to talk to a 11-17 year old child.

This is why parents need to monitor what their children are doing online. And they need to teach them that adults talking to children is NOT appropriate at all. Even if they are fans. You can speak publicly, but never privately.
