If you grew up in the ’80s, you already know... the California Raisins were EVERYWHERE. It all really took off in 1986, when those little Claymation raisins strutted across our television screens singing “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” Created by Will Vinton Studios, the original commercial became such a hit that what started as an advertising campaign quickly turned into an ’80s pop-culture phenomenon. Before long, the Raisins weren’t just in commercials. They were on lunchboxes, T-shirts, toys, figurines, records, school supplies and just about anything else you could imagine. By 1988 and 1989, California Raisins memorabilia was at the height of its popularity. And then came some unforgettable celebrity appearances. Ray Charles joined the fun, and even Michael Jackson received his own Claymation Raisin caricature, complete with the unmistakable hair, jacket and dance-inspired look. The Raisins became so big that television commercials weren't enough anymore. There were TV specials, including Meet the Raisins!, and in 1989 The California Raisin Show brought them to CBS Saturday mornings. Think about that for a minute. These characters started out trying to sell raisins, and somehow became recording stars, collectibles, television characters and one of the most recognizable pieces of 1980s advertising. For an ’80s kid, seeing that purple Claymation crew today can instantly take you back to Saturday morning cartoons, cereal at the kitchen table, commercials you actually stopped to watch, and that California Raisins lunchbox sitting somewhere nearby. If you know, you know. The moment you heard... 🎶 “I heard it through the grapevine...” ...you knew exactly who was coming across that TV screen. Some commercials sold products. The California Raisins became part of our childhood.
