A poor man stands on a sunlit stone terrace, looking down at a thin old dog lying weakly at his feet. The man is dressed like a beggar. The dog looks too tired to stand. But this is not a stranger meeting a stray dog. The beggar is really Ulysses, also known as Odysseus, finally returning home after twenty years of war and wandering. He has disguised himself so well that no one recognizes him. His enemies do not know him. His servants do not know him. Even the people closest to him see only a broken beggar. But Argus knows. The old dog recognizes his master instantly. The years have changed Ulysses. The disguise has hidden him from everyone else. But loyalty sees what the human eye misses. That is why the scene hurts. Ulysses cannot kneel. He cannot touch the dog. He cannot say his name. The dog gives him recognition. The man gives him silence. Argus waited twenty years.
