They are not battling the are having a conversation with each other with the guitars. It is a Call and Response lead playing. This style is very prominent in blues music.

slash is a rock player and just a rock player, John mayer may play pop tunes on tv but hes a masterfully trained blues musician first. of course hes going to wreck slash in a play off
