@atlantasistah: June 30, 1995. The world lost one of the greatest voices it has ever known. For years, I was mad as hell at Phyllis Hyman. I fussed at her like I knew her personally. Truth is... I didn't know a damn thing. I didn't know the weight of the depression, bipolar disorder, addiction, and pain she carried every single day. Mental illness doesn't care how beautiful you are. It doesn't care how gifted you are. It doesn't care how much the world loves you. That changed how I remember her. I often wonder what her life might have looked like if today's conversations, treatments, and mental health resources had existed then. We'll never know. What I do know is this ... Her voice still lives. Her music still moves me. And I refuse to let her memory fade. One of my biggest regrets will always be leaving the Fox Theatre after her final concert in Atlanta. I waited for hours hoping to meet her... then gave up and went home. If only I had waited a little longer. Please check on yourself. Check on your people. If you're struggling, ask for help.
