A nurse who continually asks questions and admits when they don’t know something is a SAFE nurse

I'm a rare RN. I love students. Come to me, we'll drill meds, procedures, disease process, etc. I usually end up with the entire clinical class following me around like a flock of geese. 😅

Nurses specialize. Nursing school doesn’t teach you how to be a PACU, NICU, OR, ED nurse, etc. It just gives you basic nursing knowledge. I had a MD, pediatric resident shadow me last week. She also had basic medical school knowledge. Even as a MD she did not have all of the knowledge in this specialty that a seasoned RN or physician would have. Nurses stop eating your young and share your knowledge to foster and grow our field.

As a nursing student that spent 3 years as a very hardworking PCT on a medsurg floor that took up to 15-30 pt at a time…. I have had clinicals with nurses that made me feel the most stupid I’ve ever felt in my life. I was fully prepared and offering my help at all times even when I wasn’t asked to… I have experienced severe hate, judgment, and belittling. It sucks so bad because I have honestly learned more as a PCT in a hospital than a nursing student in hospital. I never and will never understand “nurses eat their young”. Healthcare workers should respect and coexist happily with other healthcare workers.

Also every nurse/doctor will have their own opinion on how things should be done. Every single doctor that I’ve done bedside intubations with has a different preference on how they want things done. That can be very confusing for a new grad nurse when they are getting contradicting information.

Oh and: I only get nervous when a grad isn’t asking questions. Overconfidence is what scares me.

The new grads who I'm concerned about are the ones who don't ask questions. If I don't know the answer, I find out & we learn together.

YESSSSSSSSSS! I am a clinical instructor and I cannot stress all of these points enough! Some students are also living life in a “fight or flight” mode while in nursing school! Treat them kindly. Lead by example. You can’t expect someone to give compassionate care and empathy without exhibiting it to them as a leader!

Bullying behavior is a form of lateral violence. I believe if you bully others for seeking knowledge in the profession, you only perpetuate the problem.

Not just new grads. I encourage everyone to ask questions or ask for help I don’t care how long you have been a nurse. I will always help. Or find that mean old Betty that’s been working on the unit since it was built in 1842. Tell them you acknowledge their value(super important cause she’s been stepped on and felt undervalued for half her life) and ask them if you can lean on them. My work momma was so MEAN. But I learned so much from her. If you aren’t in an environment where you have atleast one person to lean on that’s not the place for you babe at any stage of your career.

As a new NP, it happens there too! The NP preceptors and/or doctors are quizzing you and looking at you with disgust or shaking their heads if you don’t know the answer or answer wrong. It was so intimidating. I love NP students and have vowed to never treat them in a condescending way.

I’ve been a nurse almost 20 years and there’s still so many nurses that “eat their young” and it makes me so sick!!! None of us know everything and we continue to learn, grow and face new challenges and illnesses everyday!! We should embrace new nurses that care enough to ask and want to do a good job! I don’t understand why nurses treat each other as threats instead of realizing it’s a huge compliment that they asked you because they look up to you!! I could write a book on this! Thank you for posting this!! ❤️🥰

This is so sad. As a “senior nurse” I would not be where I am today if not for asking questions-AND I STILL DO!!! Everyone on my floor is super helpful to new grads especially, checking in & making sure they are building confidence when on their own. I guess I’m on a unicorn floor-but it shouldn’t be!!
