@sacramentourbanmedia916: A quiet evening turned tragic in Utah when 71-year-old James Randell Witten was fatally shot while taking out the trash outside his home in West Point, about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City. Neighbors said they heard “pop, pop, pop” before police flooded the neighborhood. Witten’s wife, Maria, believes the attack was completely random, saying, “They killed an old man who was doing no harm. I think they just decided they were gonna shoot the first person they saw in a yard.” After weeks of investigating, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23-year-old Axel Eduardo Chavez. Authorities say he was located in Las Vegas, arrested on June 16, and later extradited to Utah. He now faces charges including murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct. Investigators have not found any evidence that Witten and the suspect knew each other. They tracked a maroon Honda Civic seen leaving the scene and worked with Las Vegas authorities to identify the suspect. Witten was a 20-year Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam. According to his obituary, he loved hiking, biking, camping, writing short stories, and exploring the outdoors with friends in his RV.
