@abcnewsaus: 📍 A decades-old pipeline supplying water to nearly 1 million people in Papua New Guinea's capital is at risk of collapsing without urgent repairs, threatening to cut off more than half of the city's water supply. Residents are being urged to remain calm while emergency planning is underway to fix segments of the pipeline. It is just one part of an Australian-built water infrastructure network that has been operating under "extreme" and "unsustainable" risk, while the nation's state-owned water utility is effectively insolvent, the ABC can reveal. Water PNG wrote that it had warned the PNG government of problems since April last year in a series of formal letters. It also said Water PNG was effectively insolvent, with the PNG government owing more than $80 million in unpaid water bills to the cash-strapped utility. PNG Prime Minister James Marape told the ABC he only became aware of the situation in recent months. 📸 via ABC News by Papua New Guinea correspondent Marian Faa 🕒 Published 1pm AEST, July 1, 2026 #ABCNewsInternational#PNG#PortMoresby#Water#PapuaNewGuinea

This has been the case for the past 10 years. Water PNG doing the best with what they have. Obvious neglect from past management has compounded the issue but current management is being proactive but needs funds to implement. If the Government can issue 1 billion for fuel subsidy why can't they give WPNG that same amount to cover the arrears and carry out the upgrades that are required.

Instead of being proactive, we have become reactive . Hence, start preparing when the issues present themselves. Sad reality.
