I believe, the two asterisks are used kind of parenthetically, so the text within the double asterisk pair are formatted into the BOLD form of the typeface... but the machine that was supposed to print that text doesn't offer that function, so it's printed plainly with the pair of asterisks.

I was somewhat paranoid that something like this existed for Japanese too. I sometimes text Chatgpt about my day in Japanese to practice making my own sentences but always hesitated reading its reply since I worried that I’d unconsciously pick up it’s way of texting and start sounding like AI to Japanese people;; this really helped confirm my feeling;;;

The more I watch this, the more I sink into the gloom of realizing that I type like an LLM—I like ems and ens, and whenever I enumerate, either I use ・ or any of the circled numbers with my Japanese keyboard. It'll be a matter of time that I get accused of being dependent on AI.
