I think Punjabis and present day Pakistan never thought of them selves as one country with rest of India .. hence no participation in 1857 rebellion .. it has nothing to do with loyalty as you have analyzed it ..

Did any of this overlay with the caste system?

BadhairBruddah :
Didn’t Britain create this system after the great Indian revolt of 1857 specifically categorising Bengali as non-martial race because British East India company the majority of their soldiers went Bengali and asked they were nearly overthrown by the Bengali soldiers. The British Crown created this as a way to break cohesion between Indian ethnic groups but also categorised all major ethnic groups as non-martial races to stop a popular revolt from happening

NoTime4ThisNonsense :
Pseudoscience by the British, designed to divide and conquer, manipulate certain groups into fighting for the British, and malign those responsible for the Mutiny as inherently weak, deceptive, and treacherous.

Sikhs were very loyal to their masters and killed their own, hence why sikhs didn't partake in Indian Rebellion.

the caste system was established well before the British raj. hindus has varnas which is the oldest known form of social stratification. the system had four classes (Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras). these castes were often hereditary. the sikh religion started the abolishment of the caste system with guru Nanak and formally abolished the system under guru Gobin Singh with the formation of khalsa.

Basic history would suggest that the sikhs would make for the best warriors since their religion is based on being a warrior caste as I understand it, and then probably Pashtun tribes from Pakistan or northern India, if not from Afghanistan it self. Afgani people are usually the toughest from that region no doubt
