To be fair Sir Christopher Lee didn't say it out of malice. He was the ONLY person of the entire cast to actually meet Tolkien in person and Tolkien actually gave him his blessing to play Gandalf 🧙♂️

Honestly though, as much as I respect Sir Christopher Arandini Lee and wouldn't have dared to argue with him over anything, I think Peter Jackson made the perfect choice casting him as Saruman and Sir Ian Mckellen as Gandalf.. They play off each other so perfectly and Sir Lee's stature and voice fit Saruman so much more where the somewhat more timid and kinder faced and voiced Sir Mckellen fit Gandalf as much..
