Ken Kaneki is the main character of Tokyo Ghoul, a Kamiya University student who, after meeting the ghoul Riko Kamishiro, was seriously injured and saved only thanks to a ghoul organ transplant that turned him into a one—eyed half-ghoul. As a result of this operation, he became half human, half ghoul, which condemned him to an eternal struggle between human morality and ghoul instincts. Kaneki joins the Anteiku coffee shop, where he learns to live among ghouls and protect his new friends. His main weapon is a coca—type kagune (horsetail-shaped), which changes shape depending on his psychological state. In battle, he uses his abilities to protect the weak, but he is constantly afraid of losing control of himself. His main opponents are the CCG investigators, especially Arima Kisho, who seriously injures and almost kills him in the first season. He also encounters other ghouls, including the founder of the Aogiri Tree, Eto Yoshimura and Shu Tsukiyama. At the end of the first part, Kaneki, being transformed into a "Dragon", sacrifices himself to save Toki and the others. However, in the finale, he returns, reunites with Toka and becomes a full-fledged ghoul, happily living with her and their daughter.
