Hay Bale Planter 👨🏼‍🌾🌾 A simple hay bale can make a great low cost vegetable planter, or even a whole garden growing bed if placed side by side, and they are pretty simple to make. 😊🌱 They just need a little prep to speed up decomposition, so I start to soak them with a natural fertiliser such as seaweed or nettle at least a week prior to planting them up, which also adds extra fertility for the plants once they root into them. 🌾🍅🥒 Then, I simply make holes in the bales around three times the size of the pot of the plant I’m planting, add 3-4 trowels of compost into it, which will give the plants roots some space to settle in before they then reach the decomposing straw. Then pop in the plants ensuring they are nicely surrounded by that compost, and water them in really well with more nettle or seaweed tea. 😊💦🌱 I then grow in the bales for up to two growing seasons depending on the speed of decomposition, by which point the bales will turn into a nice compost. 🪱👍 Just ensure you source bales from farms or fields that were not treated in herbicides and or pesticides as sadly many of them are. 😕 So would you give a hay bale bed a try in your garden? 😊🌱 #vegetablegarden #gardeningtips #raisedbedgarden #gardenproject #organicgardening
