I don’t think disappointment comes from other people. It comes from the collapse of the model we built of them. Expectations are simply predictions about future behavior, and disappointment is what happens when reality contradicts those predictions. The person didn’t create the disappointment they only revealed that our understanding of them was incomplete. That’s why I don’t think the real question is ever, “Why did they disappoint me?” It’s, “What assumptions led me to expect something they were never actually capable of giving?” Once you identify where that framework broke down, you gain something far more valuable than closure. In my opinion you improve your ability to model people more accurately. That matters because it protects you from two opposite mistakes. The first is shutting everyone out because one person violated your expectations, as if one failed prediction invalidates every future one. The second is continuing to place impossible expectations on people, guaranteeing the same disappointment over and over. Understanding the framework recalibrates your expectations for the future, protecting you from both possible faults
