I was confused and had to look this up so here’s to anyone who needs explaining: This is the first year the World Cup has a Round of 32 because of the new 48 teams. Before, the first knockout round was the Round of 16. Mexico hasn’t won their first knockout game in 40 years, calling it a ‘curse’, so even though they are now in the Round of 16, they still broke that 40-year curse and won their first knockout match.
