A Los Angeles police officer testified last week he believed a man holding a bicycle lock was actually holding a Glock handgun and had shot a woman in her head when he fired three rounds at him in a clothing store, killing him but also killing a teen girl who was hiding in a nearby dressing room. When it was his turn to ask questions again, an attorney for the girls' parents immediately followed up on William Dorsey Jones' testimony.
"You know that that statement that you've repeated over and over and over again during your testimony, 'I thought she was shot in the head.' 'I shot. thought she was shot in the head,' is essential to your defense of this case. True?" asked Nick Rowley on Wednesday (April 22). "No, that's what I believed at the time, sir," Jones answered. "And you know that by saying 'he had a gun. I thought he had a gun. I thought he shot her in the head and he was going to shoot me,' is what you need to say in order to preserve your career. True?" Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Frank M. Tavelman overruled a defense objection. "No, that's what I believed at the time," Jones answered. “As an officer of the law, you know that if you fired upon someone who did not have a firearm and you did not have a reasonable belief that they had a firearm, that you lose your job and you go to jail, potentially. True?” Rowley asked. Jones’ lawyer Christian Boroquez of the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office objected, saying Rowley’s question “calls for a legal conclusion.” “Your Honor, this is completely inappropriate,” Boroquez said. Judge Tavelman sustained the objection, so Rowley asked, "You understand, there are consequences to shooting someone who is unarmed, who does not have a firearm, who does not pose an imminent threat, true?" "True,” Jones answered. "And those consequences could be pretty severe for you?" Rowley asked. "Yes,” Jones answered. You can watch longer testimony videos on my YouTube channel and Facebook page. The trial continues today (Tuesday, April 29) in Burbank. #law #police #thinblueline #court
