Clogged arteries from plaque buildup can lead to sudden heart attacks Plaque forms in arteries through a process called atherosclerosis, where fatty substances, cholesterol, and other debris collect along the inner walls of blood vessels. This usually begins when the artery lining, known as the endothelium, becomes damaged. High blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, and chronic inflammation all make this lining more prone to injury. When the lining is damaged, LDL cholesterol, often called “bad cholesterol,” seeps into the artery walls. The immune system sends white blood cells to clean it up, but instead, these cells combine with the LDL to create fatty streaks. Over time, these streaks grow into plaques that harden and narrow the arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Other factors that speed up plaque buildup include a diet high in saturated and trans fats, lack of exercise, obesity, chronic stress, and genetics. Some people are naturally more prone to plaque even with healthy habits. Controlling cholesterol, managing blood pressure, staying active, and following a balanced diet can slow or prevent plaque formation, keeping arteries healthier and reducing the risk of sudden cardiac events.
