if the standing charge was there purely for the upkeep of the system, that supplied actual upgrades consistently I wouldn't be so mad about it, but in reality it's just put into the profit pot and divided out to shareholders. Energy company profits need to be strictly capped, standing charge needs to be proven to be used strictly on essential maintainance of the system, no frivolous extras or inefficiencies, and fuel costs need to be fair. If the system operated like that, it would be justified, people are more angry that they are paying more and more through the nose for the same service every year, whilst the same companies post higher and higher profits.

standing charges have always seemed like a complete joke. He hit the nail on the head with the analogy. It makes no sense to pay JUST to have access to it when you're already paying to use it every day. Or even when you dont use it you STILL have to.
