Here's a thought experiment for you. I will give you half a million dollars if you can live in my special house for one year. In this house, you have all of the food, drink, comfort, and entertainment you could want. You can read books, watch TV, and play computer games. But the catch is that you live with two strangers, and, at every moment of every day, at least one of these strangers is watching you. They will watch you eat, they will watch you talk, and they will watch you read your book. They will watch you laugh at a Reel, and watch you get undressed for the shower. Every minute is watched. In his 1944 play, No Exit, Sartre presents this as a kind of hell. When there is no silence, no privacy, and no space to be alone, people will go mad in an exhausting, always-on state. For Sartre, there is a fundamental difference between how we are around other people and how we are alone. Even the most gregarious extrovert you can think about will sometimes need to withdraw. They will need a time or a space when they are alone and when no one is watching. They will look at themselves in the mirror and pull a pose. They will let their belly out. They will do all of the things you do when you are alone. In a world where privacy and digital anonymity are increasingly rare, or even socially taboo, Sartre's play is becoming more and more a reality. Even if you're not being judged or told what to do, you are being watched by someone, somewhere. So, would you live in the Big Brother house? Are you okay with being always on, or, as Sartre put it, is 'hell other people'?
