toph'd mother actually makes sense in the live action. in the original she saw Toph earthbend against 7 other experienced earth benders and stood her own she saw she her daughter be the greatest earth bendernin the world but still refused her daughters independence but in Netflix she doesn't see Toph pull off such a feat so she thinks she's more fragile which is a reasonable conclusion so now I found it hard to sympathise with Toph it feels like her mother is trying to protect her and not smother her
