Well the "wouldn't pass a basic quiz" question is more interesting than that; they're not Italian, but Italian American, and so they have a whole different stake in Columbus's legacy. He's part of their claim to being foundational to America as we know it (remember Tony proudly explaining to AJ that their ancestors built Newark). They're hypocrites-- they insist on being Italian but they're fish out of water on a trip to Naples, they call whitebread Italians "'Madigans"-- but the Sopranos is all about being American at a particular, kind of wistful moment at the end of the great 20th century, and the very American and very 20th century mythology around the descendants of Italian immigrants. The punchline of this episode is precisely the fact that Iron Eyes Cody was Italian... because these guys and their whole world is "native" to the USA in the most literal sense of the term.

I love how people will accuse you of being woke for mentioning all the bad stuff that Columbus did. But to be honest, Columbus Day is a woke DEI holiday. It was meant to recognize Italian Americans after decades of anti-Italian prejudice. After nearly 90 years of this holiday being around, I think other Italian Americans should be recognized - Frances Cabrini, Enrico Caruso, Enrico Fermi, etc.
