Aristotle was born in 384 BCE in Stagira, a small Greek town in northern Greece. His father, Nicomachus, served as a royal physician to the Macedonian king, which exposed Aristotle to science and medicine from an early age. At seventeen, he traveled to Athens and joined Plato’s Academy, where he studied philosophy for nearly twenty years. Although deeply influenced by Plato, Aristotle later developed his own ideas about logic, ethics, politics, biology, and metaphysics. After Plato’s death in 347 BCE, Aristotle left Athens and spent several years traveling and teaching. In 343 BCE, he was invited by King Philip II of Macedon to tutor his son, the future conqueror Alexander the Great. Aristotle educated Alexander in philosophy, literature, politics, and science, shaping the mind of one of history’s greatest military leaders. Later, Aristotle returned to Athens and founded his own school, the Lyceum. There, he wrote many influential works and encouraged observation, reasoning, and scientific inquiry. His teachings covered subjects ranging from astronomy and zoology to rhetoric and ethics. Aristotle believed knowledge should come from both logic and experience. After Alexander’s death, anti-Macedonian feelings rose in Athens, forcing Aristotle to leave the city. He moved to Chalcis on the island of Euboea, where he died in 322 BCE at the age of 62. His ideas shaped Western philosophy, science, and education for over two thousand years.
