I thought I was okay. I thought I had processed everything. I thought I had finally moved on, and that this career break was simply a chance to let my nervous system breathe after years of running on autopilot. Until tonight. I’m not sure what triggered it. Maybe it was the burnout. Maybe it was the loneliness. Or maybe, for the first time in a long time, I finally had nowhere to run. I had to sit with myself and listen to everything I had been trying so hard not to hear. I was just there having an ice cream by myself alone for the first time in a long time. And suddenly, it hit me. I burst into tears. The kind of crying that comes from somewhere much deeper than today. I didn’t try to stop it. I didn’t tell myself to be strong. I just let it happen. I cried hard. I cried loudly. I let every emotion I’ve been holding onto finally find its way out. It made me realize something. We never truly know whether someone is mentally okay. Sometimes, we don’t even know it ourselves. As long as life keeps moving, we keep moving with it. We wake up, go to work, carry responsibilities, distract ourselves, and convince ourselves we’re fine. But the moment we finally slow down and spend time alone with our own thoughts, the loudness inside our head begins to speak. And sometimes that’s when you realize… “I’m actually not okay.” And that’s okay. The past two years have carried more than I allowed myself to admit. The betrayal of someone I loved. The heartbreak. The burnout from a career I poured everything into. I think I kept pushing myself because slowing down felt dangerous. If I stopped, I was afraid I would fall apart. After the breakup, I threw every ounce of my energy into work. I convinced myself that being productive meant I was healing. I kept achieving, kept taking on more responsibility, kept telling myself I had to be strong. But strength isn’t pretending nothing hurts. Sometimes, strength is sitting alone with an ice cream, letting yourself cry without shame, and finally admitting that you’ve been carrying too much for too long. Healing isn’t always loud. Sometimes it begins with the quiet moment when you stop running from yourself and simply allow yourself to feel. Maybe this career break isn’t just about resting. Maybe it’s about finally giving myself the time and permission to grieve every version of me that survived these past two years.
