Today’s judgment is disappointing, but it does not erase the serious allegations of rand manipulation that have hung over South Africa for years. This fight has never been about politics. It is about every South African whose purchasing power, cost of living, businesses, jobs and economic future are affected by the strength of our currency. The allegations that traders from multiple banks colluded to manipulate the USD/Rand exchange rate between 2007 and 2013 remain one of the biggest financial scandals in our country’s history. While many banks have been released from this particular Competition Commission case, the legal process continues against six banks, where the allegations will be tested before the Competition Tribunal. Globally, banks involved in similar foreign exchange manipulation scandals have paid more than US$11 billion in fines.
