@tudoraesthetic: In the Aegean, the Bronze Age lasted roughly 3200–1100 BC. The Minoans of Crete and the Mycenaeans of mainland Greece forged bronze swords and daggers that were prestige objects and weapons. Many were buried in elite graves, particularly the rich shaft graves at Mycenae (c. 1600–1500 BC), where blades were decorated with inlays of gold, silver, copper, and niello. Lions pursuing prey, hunters, spirals, birds, and marine life were painstakingly hammered into the blades. Many also show evidence of use; they were not all purely decorative. Egypt’s Bronze Age (c. 3000–1200 BC) produced equally remarkable weapons. One surviving dagger features a hilt carved from hippopotamus ivory, combining imported bronze with luxury materials that reflected both wealth and long-distance trade. Bronze itself was an international technology. Copper and tin rarely came from the same place, meaning every blade represents networks of exchange that stretched across the eastern Mediterranean thousands of years before Rome. #ancienthistory #ancientgreece #History #sword #archaeology
