@engroracon: Main Bar vs Distribution Bar – Do You Know the Difference? 🏗️ #EngrOracon #Construction #CivilEngineering #StructuralEngineering #reinforcement
🎙 Combined Voice-over
Main bars carry the major bending loads in a slab and are placed along the shorter span. These bars provide the slab's main structural strength. Distribution bars run across the main bars, distribute loads, control shrinkage cracks, and keep the main bars properly spaced. Together, both reinforcement systems improve the strength, stability, and durability of a reinforced concrete slab.
📘 Teaching
A simple way to remember this is:
Main bars resist the bending forces, so they are placed along the shorter span where bending is greatest.
Distribution bars are placed perpendicular to the main bars. Their job is to distribute loads, reduce temperature and shrinkage cracks, and maintain the correct spacing of the main bars during construction.
Both are necessary because a slab needs not only strength to carry loads but also reinforcement that prevents cracking and keeps the reinforcement cage stable.
