this is also why I hate the narrative that "school wasn't made for boys" when we now see girls outperforming them. why blame girls when it's boys who are actively discouraging each other from performing academically? patriarchal values harm us all, boys included

The thing is it’s not just their friends all the males in their lives tell them uni isn’t worth it and school is a waste of time ect they are fed this bs from every angle and usually it’s only the female influence encouraging them which ends up backfiring because unfortunately the WWC have a massive misogyny problem.

“Masculinity” is based entirely around the concept of “not standing out”. Don’t dress differently, don’t express an opinion, don’t appear clever. The only area you are allowed to excel at is sports (or punching people.) other than that, keep your head down and stay mediocre. 😬

I was so relieved at 16, when all those boys left - it was so peaceful and normal after that. Like leaving an abusive partner.

It's been going on a long time and it's a really sad part of working class culture, perhaps out of self defence in a situation where it's so hard to get opportunities.

Couple it with far-right anti-intellectualism, media teacher bashing, ‘entrepreneurial’ bro-casts, etc and you’ve got a really challenging mix 👍

Facts. I grew up on a predominantly on a white council estate. My mates parents didn't care about their education and they wanted them to leave school at 16 to get a job. My mum expected me to do well at school and go to university.

There’s often a sense that education only matters if it leads to more money. If your dad is an electrician who earns well without a degree, he may think the same path should work for his sons. That is partly economic, but it is also about class and identity: people often want their children to have a life similar to their own.

It’s the same as and adult especially as a woman. People will say something that’s baseless and incorrect, you give them the fact, all of a sudden it was a joke and you’re too “woke” or serious and everyone’s laughing

Ahhh I always talk about the performative nature of young boys in school!!! I always tell the male students with genuine interests and hobbies that they’re actually the cool ones!!

I also want to add that there’s also a narrative to be good at things without needing to try too hard , because trying too hard kills the mystery of being good at this thing. It’s really a stupid mindset but I did have it when I was younger and now I’m overwhelmingly trying as hard as I can in any endeavour I pursue because I realised how awesome it is to learn

💯I remember boys being bullied for things like reading outside of school, learning another language, playing chess, playing tennis, etc.
