The problem is the ridiculous situation where you get a council house for life. It should be a temporary solution when you’re down on your luck or for those unable to work. I could have got a council house in my 20s and still been living there despite being a higher rate tax payer, it’s a flawed system.

He has it completely right and was right to call out it could've been avoided, however unlikely that would've been with successive governments.
It's a controversial take as allowing people to become property owners of their own home is a good policy in theory imo but it's also the cause of this crisis. It is just simple supply vs demand where populations tend to grow rather than decrease.

So the flip side is that Thatcher created 1.4m new home owners

its 100 percent true. I live on an estate that belonged to the council. I am still a tenant but 95 percent of these homes were sold off. some families actually lived in them but most are now private rented. the rents are terrible, I really dont know how families manage to pay such high costs. both parents working, kids stuck at home alone during the school holidays and they dont have two pennies to rub together.

It’s not just right to buy, it’s that and buy to let. Tens of thousands of us are paying our landlord’s mortgage, costs AND profit while being told we don’t earn enough to buy a home.

Not allowing councils to retain the money from the sale of council homes to build more housing instead it went to central government & was distributed amongst the wealthiest as per usual

He’s absolutely right btw. The right to buy was a good idea - the implementation and the lack of consideration for those who could not buy, was woeful.

pretty sure the fact that everyone is too skint to afford a deposit for a house is a bigger factor. even if there were more homes available people still cant afford them

Tories don’t build council homes because they believe council homes create Labour voters! In addition to those who have to pay mortgages don’t go on strike!

The "Buy to Let" scheme in the late 90's hasn't helped. Followed by the property boom after COVID. Both of these added fuel to the fire of people leveraging "equity"

He is totally right. Right to Buy was beneficial to many, my family included. However, the main problem was councils were not allowed to use the proceeds to rebuild. It was a dreadful policy that is the main reason for the current housing crisis. She was told, but ignored the warnings because she did not care. Thatcher was a disaster for this country, so many other examples of how she impoverished this country's future.
