Actually in America we have the same labor laws but companies will strong arm you with hostile work environments

I’ve always thought the same thing. When someone is working so much, I don’t look at the person and think he’s such a hard worker. I look at the company and think “wow you’re a terrible company.”

I can’t go on vacation without my phone blowing up about work stuff, calls, they need my help etc. but I am not good enough to be promoted.

I was told at my mid year review that my work is stellar and I am an invaluable source of knowledge and help. I was also told I am not doing enough to be promoted.

The USA needs to do this, so many people work past 40 hours a week, it’s not needed. We need a life outside of work, it’s a a good thing.

Nope. American manager here. All meetings and work concerns are addressed or held during working hours where everyone can be present not outside them. Happy team=happy manager. My folks are salaried. If they hit their daily goals early on Fridays and are working at least 5 hours....they leave early to enjoy the start of their weekend. Same rules apply the day before a holiday too.

20 years ago, I was fired for not being a team player when I was too sick to come in on my day off.
I was contagious and worked in enclosed spaces with the public

I've made it a rule that I work my work hours and nothing outside of it. Life's too short and I don't do the hustle bullshit

My HR told me to allow the 5am weekend texts and calls when I was out sick, because it was "part of the expectations" so that about sums up the US work culture. 😑

American here. I’m retired now, but if the employer I worked for contacted me outside of work hours it was an automatic four hours of overtime, even if the conversation lasted 5 minutes.
