Trying to control food through rules only works when you can control the situation… which means it’s not real control at all. Let’s say you don’t let yourself eat certain sweets because you feel like you’re out of control around them. Since you feel out of control around them, you choose not to keep them in the house. You notice when you don’t have them in the house you feel much more in control so you think it’s much better. BUT THEN… You go over to someone’s house and they have those desserts… you can’t stop thinking about them the whole time. You’re faced with the choice to eat them, and have guilt/lack of control, or not eat them, and live with the obsessive thoughts the whole time. Regardless, you can see that the desserts actually control you, you don’t control the desserts. Similarly, you may keep the desserts out of the house, but you now find yourself eating large amounts of other things when you have the craving for them. It feels like you’re just insatiable and always so hungry and have no control over yourself. Again, this shows that even if you “control” what you’re eating you don’t actually have control, the food does. Which brings us to the question- what is TRUE control? It’s being able to be around ANY food without thoughts circling in your mind about whether or not you should eat it or feeling like you can’t control yourself when you do. It’s knowing that when you do eat something your body is going to be completely fine. It’s never second guessing what you eat because you know exactly what works for you. In order to develop true “control” over food and have agency in your life you have to trust yourself and become free from stress around food and your body. Ready to feel in control around food so you can stop thinking about it all the time? You’re in the right place. #dietitian #foodfreedom
