Why Is Smoke Coming From an Aircraft Engine Tailpipe? Have you ever seen smoke coming from the tailpipe of a jet engine after shutdown? What may look alarming can sometimes be the result of residual fuel or oil remaining in the engine/exhaust system after operation. What causes it? During engine operation, the internal components and exhaust system reach extremely high temperatures. After fuel flow is cut off during shutdown, a small amount of residual fuel, oil vapors, or combustion products may remain. The heat retained by the engine can cause these residues to: Vaporize * Heat-soak and burn * Produce visible smoke or vapor from the tailpipe This is sometimes referred to as residual burning or afterburning of residual fuel/oil, depending on the engine and circumstances. Is it always normal? Not necessarily. A brief amount of smoke during or immediately after shutdown can be normal on some engines. However, heavy, continuous, unusual-colored smoke, excessive fuel smell, abnormal flames, or smoke accompanied by other engine indications may require further investigation. Maintenance personnel should always refer to the applicable AMM/engine maintenance manual and operating procedures before determining whether the condition is acceptable. The key maintenance lesson Never judge an engine condition by appearance alone. The duration, color, quantity, timing, engine type, operating conditions, and associated indications all matter. What looks like “smoke” may be a normal consequence of heat soak—or it may be an indication requiring maintenance attention.
