So basically like people are trying to tell us that having literally ONE staircase in a whole entire apartment building is the new genius trend and I am sitting here like excuse me what. Like okay picture this you are on the fifth floor in your cute little set and suddenly there is a fire or some super creepy guy gets into the building. If that one stairwell is blocked or has a fire in it where are you going. Nowhere babe you are literally trapped. Like the whole argument is that developers save money because they do not have to build two stairwells but guess what. They are not dropping your rent. They are keeping those extra savings for themselves while charging you three grand a month for a studio and now you do not even have a backup exit if you need to run away from a dangerous situation. Like who decided that losing half our safety options was worth making some developer richer because it sure as hell was not the girls trying to walk down the stairs safely at night.

it's amazing that the 21st century ROAD to housing act includes the removal of the dual staircase building code. It passed the house and Senate (but, of course, the executive branch is resisting)

Politically Illinois :
Legalizing cheap housing (single stair building, single room occupancy, basements, etc) will be tough and somewhat unpopular. You already see the pushback here but it’s necessary!

We need to stop messing around and just copy Texas on this. Ultimately this just means enabling property owners to build what they want on their property with reasonable safety and sanitation requirements, and not anything more.
