I was explicitly told that I got into my program because of my writing sample. NOTHING else influenced that decision. But I was applying to a creative writing program lol so it’s different for me!

If you’re going to grad school at the same uni you’re undergrad is in. try to get yourself into a class with someone who runs the program! I took geology with the assistant director of the grad program I wanted to go to, did very well in his class and he wrote me a letter of rec to his own program when I asked!

This is heavily dependent on what kind of graduate program. Clinical programs (like DDS/DMD), they barely look at CV. Whereas PhD, CV is where they start.

My grad school journey was really really weird. So I won’t get into all of it. But I had the chance to have a professor actually help me polish my cv and that truly was a blessing.

Is doing a cosmology project for 1.5 years and publishing a paper on it as first author good? And is having a well known PI be one of your letter writers also good? With a good gpa and polished SoP? Would I have a good chance at PhD program in astrophysics?
