@wfx820: Nuclear Fusion Nuclear fusion is the process in which two light atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy. This is the same process that powers the Sun and other stars. During fusion, extremely high temperatures and pressures are required to overcome the natural repulsion between positively charged nuclei. The most common fusion reaction studied on Earth involves the isotopes of hydrogen, deuterium and tritium. When these nuclei fuse, they form a helium nucleus and a neutron while releasing a significant amount of energy. Scientists are developing fusion reactors because fusion has the potential to provide a clean, safe, and nearly limitless source of electricity. Fusion offers several advantages over traditional fossil fuels. It produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, creates much less long-lived radioactive waste than nuclear fission, and uses fuels that are widely available. However, achieving and maintaining the extreme conditions needed for fusion is technically challenging, and practical commercial fusion power is still under development.
