@henryfudgeofficial: Andy Burnham might be Britain’s next Prime Minister. His plan for the North is genuinely good. But it’s missing one ingredient, and without it, billions in public investment quietly makes landowners richer instead of the people who paid for it. #andyburnham #ukpolitics #economics #ukeconomy #rentierblackhole
I like burnham and I like his book. The most pressing question for me however is actually political. Can he mobilise voters where Starmer can’t? Because there’s never going to be a 10 year plan if he’s out of a job in 3.

If he can point us in a well-costed, soft-left direction that offers clear outcomes in the future based on decisions now, plus his ability to actually sell a story, then I think he can coalesce the centrists and leftists. My prediction as things stand is Labour win the next election but without a majority, and they need to work with the Lib Dems and Greens to get things done... which I'm very fine with. Reform have gone past their peak and the Tories won't be recovered from 2024 by 2029 yet, so as long as we are seeing progress by then I think Burnham gets his 10 (8) years.

So what do we think? Do we think Andy’s plans will work? Are we all just confused who’s the prime minister at this point

I think one of the things I’m worried about is marginal pricing. We need to delink electricity and gas to finally clean the market, and lower energy bills, but he isn’t looking to do that unfortunately

As a fervent advocate of federalism, I still don’t think more devolution is the solution to this. Significant deregulation of construction, lower energy costs, lower corporate taxes, etc. would help far more. Remove those environmental regulations that are strangling our construction industry!

Aren't these policies for which the benefits will only be seen a generation down the line? Meanwhile, people are struggling NOW

That’s literally the only policy that matters for his tenure. LVT needs to be implemented and council tax scratched.

How about Parliament of England in the north, just like Scottish Parliament. Why not for England?

Quite frankly, looking around at how power has been centred in the south East of the island when geographically Manchester is far more central, and the actual state of the country outside of that centre of power, it is an excellent idea

I hope he implements LVT, for all the reasons discussed but also it's something that will cause low income households to sit up, take notice, and hopefully see that the changes made are for their benefit too, that hope is something they can feel again. It will undermine the noise out there that "things will never change", "a protest vote is the only option" and "there's no money left". It could well buy the precious time needed to make real positive change over the next decade. Years of Tory austerity backed up by the current policy under Labour has people genuinely thinking nothing can ever change, and turned people against one another to the point the general public are happy to fight over who deserves what benefit while Billionaires laugh all the way to their offshore bank. LVT is a game changer in every way. I have zero qualifications in this area but I live in an area where poverty is rife, holiday homes are on every street and Reform almost won control of the Council. It really will change people's minds as to where they put their next vote
